Discovery and cleanup of the Thomas Family Cemetery

Thomas Family cemetery after the cleanup

Headstone of Revolutionary war soldier 1CL PVT Henry Thomas

Faye, her brother Cecil, and their sister Dedi after cleaning the family cemetery

The Cleanup - In September, James and Debra along with Thomas family members Faye, Dedi, Kay, Cecil, Brad and Nancy came up from Texas for a cemetery cleanup day. After several hours of cutting and mowing and a couple of cases of poison ivy rashes, the cemetery was finally clean. Our thanks to the current owner Mr. Kitchens for giving us access to the cemetery. Nancy made a written recording of the head stones and layout of the cemetery.

As you can see, it was impossible to walk through the tall weeds to locate most of the headstones

Family Ties- James Lawler is the son of Bertha Faye Thomas Lawler-Dudley.  Faye is the Daughter of Marvin and Minnie Thomas. It is Faye's understanding that her ancestors are buried in the Thomas Cemetery in Warren County, Kentucky.

The search - James and Debra began searching by locating a possible Thomas cemetery site. But this was on the south side of the Green River and the directions mentioned being on the north side. So we drove to this site but sure enough, it was not ours.  We asked a neighbor about our cemetery and showed him our documentation. He pointed us to a man whose family owned the land at the time, Mr. Rector. We found and spoke with Mr. Rector. He said to try Ben Thomas road north, and look for Mr. Jessie Thomas. So off we went, and indeed did find Jessie Thomas. He knew all of the names on our list and told us exactly where the cemetery was. We went back to the last driveway we had passed, went behind the house, down a road past a pasture, down another road to the second gate on the right, and found the Thomas cemetery in the back right corner. We found the Cemetery very overgrown with weeds. Many of the graves are so overgrown that made it impossible to see them. That was the most disappointing part of the discovery. We were hoping to see the headstone of Henry Thomas, a Revolutionary War Soldier.

Location - The Thomas Cemetery is located on a hilltop in a cow pasture.  It has a nice new wire fence around it and is approximately 60 feet by 90 feet.  The cemetery is listed in the Warren County Kentucky Cemetery Records, Volume 1.
